    Name: Chechen Republic / Noxçiyn Respublika

    Capital: Grozny / Djovkhar Ghaala

    Surface area: 15,800 km2 (approx. same surface area as Huesca)

    Population: The last census, carried out during the Soviet Union period, in 1989, calculated a total population of 1,084,000 people. Current estimates give a population figure of some 650,000.

    According to data provided by the NGO Memorial, more than 200,000 civilians and some 30,000 combatants died during the First and Second Chechen Wars, the equivalent of 25% of the Chechen population.

    Economy: Before the war the economy was based on livestock production in mountain areas and on agriculture and the oil industry on the plains. At present 70% of the population is unemployed.

    Religious tradition: Sunni Muslim

    Ethnic groups: Chechens, Russians, Ingushetians

    Languages: Chechen and Russian
